13 September 2021: A top-ten result in a key automotive study and record new energy vehicle sales mark a successful double celebration for MG Motor's parent company SAIC Motor in August.
The Centre of Automotive Management, a renowned German automobile market research institute, released its annual study into the world's Most Innovative Automotive OEMs, with SAIC Motor ranked fifth after Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla and BMW.
This is the first time that a Chinese automaker has made the top five innovation rankings since 2005.
CAM analysed the innovations of 30 global automobile manufacturers (OEM) and startups, judging a total of 645 innovations from four important technological future fields. Each innovation was recorded individually and systematically assessed according to CAM's M.O.B.IL criteria, such as originality and customer benefit.
"The paradigmatic change in the industry can only be mastered by a high level of innovation on the part of the players," said study leader Stefan Bratzel.
"From an innovation point of view, German automobile manufacturers are doing very well so far. In the future, in addition to Tesla, they will also have to deal with new, innovative competitors from China who are well positioned in the core fields of electromobility, connectivity and autonomous driving."
Meanwhile, SAIC Motor released its August production sales bulletin, highlighting 453,000 vehicle sales which marks an increase of 28.6% month-on-month.
SAIC Motor also achieved 71,000 new energy vehicles sales, a year-on-year increase of 171.2%. This figure marks a historical record for the monthly sales of new energy vehicles by a Chinese automaker.
