  • New C5 X amalgamates the best features of three different vehicle types in a unique crossover design

  • Citroën C5 X debuts new-to-Citroën safety features

FRENCH CARMAKER CITROËN continues its Australian market expansion with the introduction of the all-new C5 X to its local model range.

This latest example of the large passenger Citroën, which will be sold here in just one highly specified model grade, follows in the footsteps of such legendary cars as the DS, XM and CX.

Like so many of its forebears, the new Citroën C5 X bristles with innovation and boasts unrivalled comfort courtesy of the Citroën Advanced Comfort™ Program focusing on two areas, ride and comfort, through its Citroën Advanced Comfort™ Seats and Citroën Advanced Comfort™ Suspension.

New C5 X boasts unrivalled ride comfort through the use of Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension and, inside, seats designed to give lounge-like comfort in the spacious passenger compartment.

C5 X bolsters the local Citroën range with a unique and compelling product, sporting a totally new body style which is sure to expand its customer base.

An original design, it employs a completely different styling philosophy in the large premium car segment; a unique vehicle delivering an avant-garde body shape combining sedan elegance, ride and handling with wagon versatility and an SUV's elevated stance.

The seamless blending of the three design elements is reflected in the long sedan-style bonnet and raked windscreen, the large wagon-like boot and the raised driving position, all combining to create an original styling experience.

The styling is further enhanced with distinctive V-shaped front and rear lighting signatures, making the newcomer instantly recognisable as a Citroën, the package underscored with 19-inch diameter diamond cut alloy wheels.

Other features of this latest Citroën include the windscreen projected Extended Head-Up Display (e-HUD), a 12-inch, high-definition touchscreen with ambient backlighting, electrically adjustable driver and front passenger seats, a panoramic opening glass roof and a formidable array of active safety features, some new to the brand.

For the first time, Citroën buyers will be able to experience Connected Services, or an internet-connected vehicle to help with a range of navigation tasks. This includes live carpark space availability, locating fuel outlets and fuel price, with live traffic routing, internet enabled map searching and map updates, as well as warning of speed camera locations and accident danger zones. Connected Services also enable advanced native voice recognition for all navigation searches and vehicle functions.

Connected Services require a subscription through the Citroën website or the myCitroën app and is free for three years from vehicle warranty start date. Customers have the option to purchase additional incremental one or three year extensions to the complimentary three year period.

C5 X's mechanical motivation is provided by Citroën's critically acclaimed PureTech 180 petrol engine, a turbocharged 1.6-litre, four-cylinder unit delivering133 kilowatts of power at 5,500rpm and 250 Newton metres of torque at 1,650rpm. It is paired with an eight-speed Efficient Automatic Transmission (EAT8) for both smooth shifting and performance.

Citroën Australia Managing Director, Kate Gillis, says new C5 X, with its fresh and innovative styling, powerful and economic drivetrain, and strong standard equipment list, boasts impressive buyer appeal that will further expand the brand's Australian growth opportunities.

"This latest addition to our Australian range not only bolsters our model line-up but also provides a unique and compelling product offering with the return to the touring segment – a car that connects to classic Citroëns such as the Traction Avant.

"C5 X truly underscores the brand's design DNA and will appeal to those discerning Australian drivers keen to travel in absolute comfort and style. It also gives us the opportunity to engage with both new and existing Citroën audiences," Ms Gillis added.

"The C5 X is a unique offering in the market, either in terms of its visual appeal and dimensions, its versatility or in the way it combines the most advanced comfort features with the latest technologies to deliver unrivalled comfort and serenity.

"Indeed, in true Citroën tradition, the all-new C5 X is a one-of-a-kind car," she concluded.

Citroën C5 X is on sale now and priced at $57,670 MLP*.

ALL-NEW CITROEN C5 X: THE RIGHT COMBINATION FOR AUSTRALIA'S PREMIUM CAR SEGMENT

Citroën is not simply a great car maker: it is also a maker of great cars.

Which means its return to Australia's large passenger car market was never going to be with an ordinary three-box design. No, with its all-new C5 X, Citroën has returned with a radically different, multi-faceted car.

Bold and innovative in true Citroën style, this 'next generation' car neatly combines a broad range of styles to meet a broad spectrum of owner needs and expectations.

Citroën's designers recognised the appeal of SUVs and wagon styles to customers wanting assertive and practical vehicle characteristics that stand out from the crowd and gave them an alternative.

That alternative cleverly blends body types combining - in balanced proportion - rounded, muscular shapes and sleek, streamlined styling that combines sedan status and elegance, the practicality and versatility of a wagon and the robust, elevated feel of an SUV.

By doing this, Citroën ensures C5 X perfectly meets the needs of customers wanting a large, modern, functional alternative to sedans, wagons and SUVs. In other words, all-new C5 X is a car for buyers who don't want to be locked into the mainstream.

Its size as well as its seductive styling ensures it will not go unnoticed, C5 X standing 4805mm in overall length, 1865mm wide and 1490mm tall, all of it on a generous 2785mm wheelbase.

C5 X is a vehicle that flaunts its modernity and not only with its style but also with its onboard technologies, its versatility, practicality, spaciousness and load-carrying ability.

More than just a stunningly beautiful design, it also delivers in terms of comfort through the Citroën Advanced Comfort™ Program, with ride qualities provided by the suspension's Progressive Hydraulic Cushions™ and the carefully designed Citroën Advanced Comfort™ Seats, both working to fulfil Citroën's fabled 'magic carpet ride' reputation.

In short, this latest Citroën is the perfect combination of aesthetics, versatility and safety.

C5 X: MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF A CHANGING MARKET

EXTERIOR DESIGN

Blending classic and contemporary.

Just as C5 X takes its styling cues from contemporary sedans, wagons and SUVs, it also takes its inspiration from Citroëns past and imagined, blending influences from classics models like the Traction Avant, DS, CX and XM with ideas from the CXperience and 19_19 concept cars.

C5 X introduces a range of new design features. Chevron badging on the radiator grille flows outward to the 3D LED daylight running lights, for example, emphasising the bonnet's clamshell design.

At the same time fluid and aerodynamic lines, a high waistline and distinctive kick-up over the rear wheels highlight the car's dynamism.

C5 X's profile shows that aerodynamic efficiency was a priority, ensuring the styling is instantly eye-catching: assertive, robust, distinctive – a fastback body style paying full attention to aerodynamics.

Fluid design embodied in C5 X
As well as giving Citroën C5 X a unique visual identity, the powerful styling draws inspiration from the aviation industry, optimising aerodynamics with a slippery 0.291 drag co-efficient, helping reduce fuel consumption.

The exterior fluidity emphasises both the long, low bonnet line rising into the high belt line and the powerful rear wheel arch shape.

Combined with an extended roof line they give the car a distinctive appearance highlighting the car's cutting-edge design.

The prominent wheel arches enhance the vehicle's character and are amply filled with 19-inch diameter Aero X alloy wheels and wide 205/55 tyres. The precise design of the flattened outer edges of the wheel arch flares ensures air flows cleanly along the body sides.

Airflow is also promoted by a wheel design using aerodynamic inserts to create a turbine effect, guiding the airflow and lowering aerodynamic drag.

The elongated roofline ends in a purposeful floating spoiler and the car's overall character is enhanced by chrome trim above the rear quarter-panel windows, visually extending the upper chrome window mouldings.

C5 X's black contrasting bi-tone roof, supported by slender A, B, C and D-pillars, is enhanced by a generous glass area, giving the impression of a floating roofline and further accentuating the car's stylish appearance.

A modern, high-tech front end
A new V-shaped lighting signature, comprising LED headlights, debuts on C5 X. Echoing the car's rear light signature for greater consistency, it makes a bold statement in the large touring car segment.

The refined and subtle use of chrome and gloss black highlights also help C5 X stand apart from the crowd.

Citroën's designers have used the company's trademark chevrons to good effect, those in the upper part of the radiator grille highlight the bonnet's leading edge by stretching out to the LED daytime running lights, accentuating the car's width. The lower chevrons reach out to the LED headlights, bringing a refined, high-tech appearance.

C5 X's lighting signature incorporates vanes in the headlights to create a graphic chevron design. The vanes are echoed in the rear lighting design, reinforcing the overall light signature and highlighting the car's styling.

The bonnet is set low for maximum forward vision while pronounced bulges running backwards from the nose to the windscreen give a nod to other Citroën models.

Beneath the stylish bumper, the lower air intake features a highly geometric design drawing inspiration from Citroën's traditional chevrons.

A powerful rear end combining elegance and practicality
At the rear, the upper spoiler on the roof's trailing edge visually extends the passenger compartment rearwards while the use of rounded lines on the lower panels reflect previous large Citroëns.

Fine detail in the lines around the number plate and bumper, as well as the lower chevron pattern and the decorative chrome trim surrounding the reflectors, not only emphasises C5 X's width but also its road presence.

The 3D LED taillights stretch horizontally across the tailgate and forward along the rear quarter panels, at the same time extending vertically to reinforce the car's solid stance.

The V-shaped rear light design echoes the front lighting array while accentuating the powerful curvature of the belt and shoulder lines and highlighting the rear three-quarter view.

The tailgate, which gives easy access to the large boot, also accentuates C5 X's width and its functionality and practicality are underscored by the low load sill height.

The tailgate is highlighted by a prominent lower spoiler. Far more than a mere aesthetic touch, it provides added aerodynamic stability.

SUV inspiration raises C5 X's stance
The muscular stance chosen for Citroën C5 X highlights the 'looking down on the road' appearance of contemporary SUVs, a raised vehicle posture helped by the use of tall and narrow 55-series tyres with 19-inch diamond cut two tone alloy wheels.

C5 X's driving position is higher than that used for traditional sedans and wagons, the raised posture engendering a feeling of occupant protection and vehicle sturdiness.

Adding to that SUV feel, C5 X's body features matte black protective trim around its wheel arches, bumpers, and lower sill sections, accentuating the feeling of sturdiness and robustness.

Exterior styling touches include a black bi-tone roof, elegant body-coloured door handles and gloss black power-operated, heating, and folding exterior mirrors. Stylish aerodynamic roof bars also add to C5 X's SUV appeal.

DESIGNED FOR ABSOLUTE COMFORT

Interior design
Generously proportioned and with unique attention to detail, C5 X's elegant passenger compartment gives a real impression of warmth and comfort, combining tranquillity and spaciousness with technological innovation.

An invitation to tranquillity
In keeping with Citroën's philosophy, C5 X features an interior laden with warm and refined materials.

The Citroën Advanced Comfort™ Seats used for C5 X maximise seating comfort and deliver living room comfort levels with special seat padding which acts in the same way as a mattress topper.

Dynamic and postural seating comfort is produced by a high-density layer of thickened, structured foam to ensure occupants feel relaxed, even on the longest journeys.

Interior spaciousness afforded by the car's generous 2785mm wheelbase and 1865mm overall width was a C5 X design priority addressed by the wide cabin featuring the clean lines of the broad, uncluttered, horizontal dashboard.

Exceptional legroom front and rear, comfortable width and generous headroom also promote a feeling of openness, especially for rear seat occupants.

Interior ambience is further enhanced by a glass area which includes rear quarter windows and a large opening glass sunroof complete with sunblind, allowing light to flood into the cabin.

The windscreen and front and rear side glass are acoustically laminated to provide exceptional insulation from external noise and the side windows are tinted to maximise relaxation.

Versatility, practicality and the advantages of a wagon
C5 X's practicality has been considered down to the last detail with important touches including keyless proximity locking and unlocking, keyless entry and keyless push button start.

At the rear, the boot has been designed in the spirit of a wagon in terms of its dimensions but with exclusive features.

With the back seat raised the boot boasts a generous 545 litre volume increasing to 1,640 litres when the rear seat is folded. The load space, accessed through a wide and functional hatchback opening, has a flat floor and vertical sidewalls.

The tailgate is motorised and has a convenient hands-free function while a luggage privacy curtain linked to the tailgate hides valuable cargo.

In the cabin, carefully designed storage compartments hold, store, or conceal a range of everyday items and are spread around the interior, increasing the feeling of roominess with 12 spaces offering a total 28 litres capacity, making life easier for passengers needing secure places for everyday items.

Storage spaces include a wide, deep glovebox, a gull-winged opening under the front central armrest, another forward of the centre console which includes wireless smartphone charging, an open storage space in front of the central armrest, cup-holders in the centre console, door pockets and seatback pockets in the backs of the front seats.

INTERIOR COMFORT

First Class travel in C5 X
Spaciousness was one of Citroën's main concerns when designing C5 X and that meant going beyond a wide cabin with generous leg and headroom.

When drivers enter the vehicle, the seat automatically moves backwards for easier access, returning to the stored driving position once the driver is seated.

Comfort is also guaranteed through the use of automatic dual-zone, climate-control air conditioning.

Trimmed to perfection
C5 X's sublime Hype Black interior pairs seamlessly with the Mistral Black Paloma leather^^ upholstery (complete with perforated chevron design) used for the Citroën Advanced Comfort™ Seats.

The driver's seat, which features memory settings, gains eight-way power adjustment including fore and aft movement, backrest, seat height, tilt and lumbar adjustments. The front passenger seat features six-way power adjustment including fore and aft movement, backrest, lumbar and height adjustments for added ergonomic comfort.

Both front seats are heated for maximum comfort.

The joy of chevrons
Every detail in all-new C5 X's passenger compartment is designed to give passengers immediate feelings of comfort and serenity when they first enter.

In many ways the small details are just as important as the big ones and as occupants familiarise themselves with the car, they quickly discover the many things that make C5 X so enjoyable.

Citroën's famous chevrons, for example, are presented in numerous and unique ways - and in great detail.

They appear as 3D 'grain' on the dashboard's wood-effect trim and are reflected in the stylised, continuous stitching on the tops of the seat backrests and in the door panel insets.

They are also screen-printed on the strips across the tops of the backrests, engraved on the main cabin controls (gearshift, air-conditioning and radio controls), on the bottoms of the storage compartments and as perforations in the leather^^ seat trim.

The passenger compartment is also decorated with gloss black and satin chrome touches, reinforcing the refinement of the colours and materials used.

Elegant interior lighting
As well as the generous glass area, C5 X's spacious, airy cabin is enhanced by ambient lighting with adjustable intensity. The glovebox, boot and centre console compartment are also illuminated, as are the footwells and the interior door handles.

Enhanced infotainment and technology
All-new C5 X also debuts new state-of-the-art technologies to make travel more relaxed, safer and fun, starting with the Extended Head-Up Display (e-HUD), Citroën's most advanced head-up display.

An immersive technology foreshadowed in the 19_19 Concept, it helps drivers relax by putting the information they want directly in their line of sight, ensuring they no longer need to divert attention from the road.

The e-HUD is as impressive as it is useful, a large-scale, full-colour, projection through the windscreen placing all relevant vehicle information - speed, navigation, driving assist systems or phone calls, for example - in the driver's field of vision.

A smaller 7-inch colour digital display forms C5 X's main instrument cluster, simplifying vehicle operations with clear, concise readouts letting drivers monitor C5 X's vital signs and access vehicle information on the move.

Citroën's enhanced infotainment system uses an ultra-wide 12-inch, high-definition touchscreen with ambient backlighting.

Featuring wireless Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto® smartphone connectivity, the infotainment system also serves as the operating hub for the car's climate-control air conditioning, audio and satellite navigation, and features phone commands with advanced natural voice recognition.

Screen mirroring means users can also customise their preferred shortcuts as key functions and set their own user profiles and preferred screen ambience.

As well, four USB 'C' sockets - two front and two rear – and two 12-volt power outlets (one in the front console and the other in the boot) plus a wireless smartphone charging pad coupled with wireless smartphone mirroring ensure a completely connected yet hassle free wireless travelling experience. C5 X also features a thick-rimmed, heated, flat-bottomed, leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel with height and reach adjustment and paddle shifters plus controls for the driving assistance and infotainment functions.

As well as the steering wheel-mounted gearshift paddles, C5 X also sports an e-Toggle automatic gear selector switch on the centre console, next to the electric parking brake control.

Other interior highlights include LED 'Welcome' lighting for the door handles, front footwells and instrument panel, aluminium door sill protectors, black leather-effect trim on the door panel inserts and central armrest and brushed aluminium pedals.

COMFORTABLE, POWERFUL, SAFE AND THRIFTY
QUICK AND EFFICIENT

Engine and transmission
Australian market C5 X is powered by Citroën's acclaimed PureTech 180 engine, a turbocharged, fuel-injected 1.6-litre, four-cylinder, petrol engine delivering 133 kilowatts of power at 5,500rpm and 250 Newton metres of torque at 1,650rpm.

The engine features Stop&Start technology to minimise fuel use and is both powerful and frugal. Paired with an eight-speed Efficient Automatic Transmission (EAT8), which delivers power to the front wheels, it has a 230km/h top speed and covers 0-100km/hr in 8.1 seconds.

At the same time, C5 X achieves impressive fuel economy figures with 7.0 litres/100km on the NEDC City Cycle, 5.4 litres/100km on the Highway Cycle and 6.0 litres/100km on the Combined Cycle. Exhaust emissions are just 137g/km of CO2.^

Advanced Comfort Suspension
The Citroën Advanced Comfort™ Suspension, the lynchpin of the Citroën Advanced Comfort™ Program, is a highlight of C5 X.

Designed to help create Citroën's legendary 'magic carpet ride' quality, it significantly reduces the shocks of surface imperfections such as potholes, kerbs and speed bumps or poor-quality roads.

Citroën Advanced Comfort™ Suspension uses Progressive Hydraulic Cushions™, hydraulic stops - one for compression and the other for rebound – and separate to the springs and dampers - which work on both compression and rebound to moderate suspension movement and eliminate harshness.

The suspension design works together with the Citroën Advanced Comfort™ Seats, taking the company's reputation for luxurious ride to a whole new level.

Wheels and tyres
New C5 X rides on 19-inch diameter 'Aero-X' two tone diamond-cut alloy wheels and 205/55 tyres. The wheels also feature Onyx Black paint and Onyx Black aero inserts.
