Hobart, November 1, 2019 – The all-new second-generation Audi A1 Sportback has arrived in Australia to redefine its place in the premium compact segment. It's almost a size larger and affords outstanding versatility. With a bold, futuristic design, the new A1 is the ideal companion for an urban lifestyle. No sacrifices have been made on safety or technology, with a suite of systems that are revolutionary for its segment.
The original first-generation Audi A1 model line first appeared in 2010, with its distinctive look and youthful design, paving the way for it to carve out its own territory within the premium compact segment. Fast-forward eight years and it has grown up significantly, with a striking new design that bears a remarkable resemblance to the legendary Audi Sport quattro.
The new A1 Sportback is 56 millimetres longer, with the wheelbase stretched by 94 millimetres for much roomier passenger accommodation. Luggage capacity has also been increased by a substantial 65 litres, to 335 litres. For comparison, the new A1 Sportback has a larger interior than the first-generation A3 and is only slightly smaller than the second-generation A3. This means that the new A1 provides excellent versatility in an urban environment.

With Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) that also detects cyclists and pedestrians, as well as Audi lane departure and advanced pre sense features, the
new A1 Sportback sets a peerless standard in its segment. The A1 Sportback has ISOFIX points on the outboard rear seats and has 6 airbags.
Accordingly, the A1 Sportback has been given a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, embracing a suite of innovative driver assistance systems as standard to enhance
safety for occupants, as well as cyclists and pedestrians. James Goodwin, ANCAP Chief Executive said the A1's rating was an impressive score for the category.
"It is encouraging to see vehicle brands prioritise collision avoidance capabilities across their model line-ups, including the smaller city cars which mix regularly with pedestrians and cyclists in addition to other vehicles," said Goodwin.
Parking within tight, urban environments has never been easier, with parking system plus (front and rear sensors) and a reversing camera included as standard. The active semi-autonomous park assist function is also available in the 40 TFSI.
Infotainment and connectivity are real strengths of the new A1. Even in the entry model, there are several options for owners to integrate the latest technology into their driving experience, with 2x USB outlets (1x USB-A, 1x USB-C) allowing Audi smartphone interface for either Apple or Android devices. This, and the Audi MMI system, are displayed and controlled via a large 8.8-inch touchscreen, while all the driving information is displayed in high-resolution 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.
Available with the 35 TFSI and standard in the 40 TFSI is the MMI Navigation plus, which offers a larger 10.1-inch touchscreen, the Audi virtual cockpit, 3D navigation with Google Earth mapping and a suite of wireless connectivity functions. These include wireless Apple Carplay, dual simultaneous Bluetooth phone connection and also the innovative convenience of Audi connect plus.
Audi connect plus utilises an online connection to find relevant information for the driver. Some examples include fuel pricing, parking information, weather, Google Search point-of-interest and Google Earth mapping, as well as navigation destination entry via Google Maps on your smartphone. In addition, connect plus uses online traffic information to pinpoint traffic jams, in order to navigate around them.
It works via an embedded SIM card that is installed in the factory while the car is produced. In Australia, this connects to the Telstra mobile network for data services – the cost of which are included in the price of the vehicle for at least the first three years of ownership.
The all-new A1 Sportback line-up will consist of three petrol TFSI drivetrains, all with direct fuel-injection and turbocharging for strong performance and excellent efficiency credentials.
The A1 entry variant 30 TFSI is powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine, producing 85kW with peak torque of 200Nm. Consumption is rated at 5.4 L/100km, with CO2 emissions of 122 grams/km.
Additionally, the mid-tier 35 TFSI model is powered by an all-new 1.5-litre, 4- cylinder engine featuring innovative design and a composite material mix. Peak power is 110kW, with peak torque of 250Nm from just 1500rpm. Overall refinement is outstanding for such a small engine. Fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions values are 5.8 L/100km and 132 grams/km respectively.
The 40 TFSI S line is the performance model in the range; boasting a 2.0-litre, 4- cylinder engine that produces 147kW/320Nm. It can reach 100km/h from rest in just 6.5 seconds, with a top speed of 235km/h. Despite this, fuel efficiency is excellent, at 6.4 L/100. CO2 emissions are 146 grams/km.
The 30 and 35 TFSI engines are mated to the efficient and smooth-shifting sevenspeed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, while the 40 TFSI has a six-speed version tuned for sporty performance.
As expected of a premium vehicle, even the A1 Sportback 30 TFSI entry model comes generously equipped, including 16-inch alloy wheels, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, DAB+ digital radio, MMI radio plus 80W 6-speaker audio system, multi-function steering and cruise control with speed limiter.
In addition, the 35 TFSI model rolls on 17-inch alloy wheels and adds highlights like convenience key, Audi phone box light wireless smartphone charging and auto-dimming interior mirror.
The range-topping 40 TFSI features 18-inch alloy wheels for sporty looks and handling, along with S line exterior, LED headlights with dynamic indicators, red brake calipers, Audi drive select, dual-zone climate control and sports front seats.
To complement the exterior look of the 30 and 35 TFSI, the $2,990 Style package adds LED headlights with dynamic indicators, one-size larger alloy wheels and other accents. A Technik and Premium Plus package are also available for some models.
The A1 Sportback is offered with the comprehensive Audi service plan package, priced at $1,480 for three years or $1,990 for five years.
The all-new Audi A1 Sportback is on-sale now, with first customer deliveries expected to take place in November.
