COVID-19 has drawn some of the Australia's best Muscle Cars out of their garages, with some great examples entered in Shannons Timed Online Autumn April auction from April 13-20.
The top-dog of the pack is a fully-restored and four-speed manual 1970 Ford Falcon XW GT.
While the later XY GT might be the iconic Australian muscle car, its predecessor XW model has rarely been as well represented as this rare twin-tag car – one of just 70 to have both big and small compliance plates.
The Reef Green GT was ordered from local Sale dealer Prestney Bros Ford in early 1970, with a banded laminated tinted windscreen and with the model's distinctive black bonnet paint, bonnet pins, its body side stripes and signature Super Roo logos, all deleted, making it a visual 'sleeper'.
During its full back to bare metal restoration in 2003/2004, it regained its black bonnet, side stripes and Super Roo logos, but not the bonnet pins. Part of the XW's rejuvenation was a rebuild of its original 351ci V8, which was x-rayed at the time, as were the shock towers and radiator support panel.
This superb XW GT – truly one for the fastidious Ford collector – is expected to sell in the $150,000 - $170,000 range.
Equally exciting for Holden Muscle Car lovers is a one family owned 1972 HQ Holden Monaro LS 308 V8/Trimatic three-speed automatic coupe with a known history, including original books, and still fitted with its original trim and mechanicals.
Delivered new to New Zealand, the Taormina Aqua metallic paint Monaro with its black vinyl roof and flax coloured vinyl and brocade cloth interior arrived in Australia in 2018 and comes to auction in lovely condition, displaying some the patina of use.
This rare survivor in its rare colour combination is expected to sell in the $80,000 - $100,000 range.
Another classic Holden 'Muscle Car' in the auction is a restored and striking, orange 1971 Holden LC GT-R Torana Coupe that is being offered with 'no reserve' and is expected to bring $65,000 - $75,000.
Also expected to be in demand in the auction is a stunning, single family owned 1965 Holden HD X2 Premier Sedan – rated by Shannons Melbourne auction staff as 'the best HD we have seen'.
Showing just 50,000 miles on its odometer and with its 179ci X2 engine mated to a two-speed Powerglide column-shift automatic transmission and power disc brakes, the XD has been further enhanced with a long list of NASCO period accessories.
These include vented rear wheel spats, a front metal external sun visor, a bonnet spear, wind deflectors for both the driver and passenger windows, mudflaps front and rear, door handle paint protector (scratch) plates, a fuel filler lip, bumper over-riders front and rear, rear window venetians, left and right-hand exterior mirrors, a mesh grille bug screen, wire mesh headlight protectors, a tow bar with five-pin plug and Holden floor mats.
This multiple trophy-winning car with awards stretching from 2000 to 2010, has been on display in the National Holden Museum in Echuca for the past eight years and is expected to sell in the $50,000 - $60,000 range.
Also a classic, but from a more modern era is a 1985 Holden VK 'Brock SS Group A Tribute' 308 V8 sedan. Beautifully-presented in signature 'Blue Meanie' paintwork with correctly-trimmed Scheel seats, tachometer and all the details that make this Tribute a close match to an original – minus the price tag – the Commodore is expected to sell well, with a realistic range of $40,000 - $60,000.
If you would rather its more modern equivalent, there's a two-owner 2009 HDT VE Commodore 'Retro' Group A SS 'Blue Meanie', build number 50 of the 250 made.
Presented in lovely condition, with a full service history and with its odometer indicating 39,000km at the time of cataloguing, this '09 HDT Blue Meanie captures the essence of an era of racing-based performance models that will never be repeated, combined with modern levels of luxury, safety and performance.
It is expected to sell in the $58,000 - $68,000 range.
Another modern performance Commodores that is already a Classic is a magnificent black-on-black 2017 HSV Commodore GTS-R Sedan with an optional sunroof that had covered a very low 8,121km at the time of cataloguing.
Presented in showroom condition, it has a full service history and clearly has been well looked after, making this example a great choice for collectors at its expected selling price of $130,000 - $160,000.
Finally for Blue Oval performance fans there are two 'no reserve' Ford FPV sedans – a 2004 Ford FPV GT-P Sedan (build No. 001) – $35,000-$45,000 and a 2007 Ford FPV F6 Typhoon Sedan (Build No. 293) – $30,000 - $40,000.
Meanwhile, for performance or tarmac rally enthusiasts, there is South African-built 1972 Ford Capri Perana fitted with a Ford 302ci V8 engine and a four-speed Toploader manual gearbox.
Build number 306 of these rare V8 Capri coupes is presented in good general condition and comes with a big folder of receipts and history for its suggested selling price of $75,000-$85,000.
