Following in the footsteps of the outstanding 206 WRC, three-times World Rally Champion, the 206 GTi 180 takes up pole position in the dynamic 206 range. The 206 GTi 180 represents a new era in Peugeot's rich GTi heritage, a heritage that includes such iconic models as the 205 GTi 1.9 and 306 GTi 6.

Designed with performance in mind
The two-litre four-cylinder engine develops 130 kW at 7000 rpm and a maximum torque of 202 Nm at 4750 rpm.

A development of the 2.0-litre, 16-valve, 100 kW engine fitted to the current 206 GTi, the engine has been significantly upgraded to increase both power and torque and provides the GTi 180 with the level of power and excitement synonymous with the Peugeot GTi brand.

The cylinder head, for example, is machined by former Formula One engine suppliers Mécachrome, while the quantity of air admitted into the engine has been optimised by means of a dual-mode intake situated upstream of the motorised throttle and a four-way aluminium manifold. The exhaust features a '4-into-1' manifold with a metal low pressure catalytic converter developed by EMITEC.

The engine is fitted to a cable-controlled close ratio gearbox with a short, and superbly precise gear change. First gear ratio has been lengthened to ensure dynamic acceleration, particularly on sharp bends, with maximum engine speed increased to 7300 rpm. With its carefully honed performance suspension set-up and 17" alloy wheels, the 206 GTi 180 offers excellent driving dynamics while maintaining the required level of passenger comfort.

The front suspension geometry has been modified with stiffer springs compared to the standard GTi (100 KW) and enhances both traction and road holding, while at the rear the latest generation rear axle includes two tie rods to maintain rear axle stability and improve road holding. The suspension is complemented by Pirelli P7000 205/40R17W tyres mounted on 17" alloy wheels. The 206 GTi 180 also features well-weighted and precise power steering which is modulated according to engine speed and which significantly contributes to the GTi 180's increased driving pleasure and superb directional control.

Engines
The engine chosen to power the 206 GTi 180 is a 2 l 16-valve, four-cylinder EW10 J4S. It develops a maximum power of 130 kW at 7000 rpm and a maximum torque of 202 Nm at 4750 rpm.

This engine is derived from the 16-valve, 100 kW 2.0 l and has been modified in a number of ways to increase its power and torque and give it the required sporting temperament.

Mécachrome was commissioned to machine the cylinder head, while the quantity of air admitted to the engine and exhaust has been optimised with a dual-mode inlet upstream of the motorised throttle and a four-way aluminium manifold. The exhaust features a "4 in 1" manifold with a metal catalytic converter.

This engine incorporates a cable-controlled, short-travel gearbox designed for sporting use with short gear ratios except on 1st gear. The latter has been extended to facilitate a fast change down, and therefore acceleration, particularly in hairpin bends. It has a rev limiter placed at 7300 rpm.

The power of the 206 GTi 180 operates through a re-designed suspension system which, together with 17" diameter wheels, offers true driving pleasure, without sacrificing comfort.

The front axle has special settings to enhance engine performance and trajectory stability, while the latest-generation rear axle adapts to engine performance and optimises guidance and overall balance.

A particular feature of the rear axle is two braces that connect the arms to the cross-member and which are fitted on the 206 SW. This suspension is enhanced by 205/40R17W Pirelli P 7000 tyres mounted on 7'' aluminium wheels. This results in the 206 GTi 180 providing highly responsive power steering, which is modulated according to engine speed.

EW10 J4S engine
The EW10 J4S petrol engine has been developed from the EW10 version that has equipped the 206, 307 and 406 models since 1999.This new 130 kW, 16-valve twin camshaft engine is distinguished by the top section of the cylinder head which incorporates the intake/exhaust – engine management system, making it the most powerful 4-cylinder engine of this generation.

This 1 997 cm3 engine with 85 mm bore and 88 mm stroke develops a maximum power of 130 kW at 7000 rpm and a maximum torque of 202 Nm at 4750 rpm. From an engine speed of 2000 rpm, this engine provides a torque of 160 Nm, representing nearly 80 % of the maximum torque available.

The intake camshaft is equipped with variable valve timing (VVT), the angular variation of which ranges from 0o to 40o in relation to the timing of the crankshaft. This variation takes place one degree at a time and allows the optimum intake of air into the combustion chambers regardless of engine speed. This feature makes the engine both flexible and powerful.

The compact aluminium-alloy engine block (AS5) has cast-iron liners. The spheroidal graphite iron crankshaft contains eight counterweights and is finely balanced to withstand engine speeds of up to 7300 rpm without vibration. At one end, on the timing side, the crankshaft drives a concentric oil pump which has internal gearing, and on the opposite side a light engine flywheel which reduces the inertia of all moving parts. The light-alloy pistons have flat heads with two dimples to avoid all contact with the intake valves. They incorporate oil-jets which facilitate cooling of the piston head.

The cylinder head is of the stabilised aluminium "cross flow" type with branched intake ducts to optimise flow. It also incorporates a V-shaped combustion chamber, a cooling chamber and valves.

On the intake camshaft equipped with the "VVT" system, variation of angular timing is controlled by the ECU according to engine oil temperature, engine load and engine speed.

Each combustion chamber (85 mm diameter) contains four valves, two intake (33.5 mm diameter) and two exhaust (28.7 mm diameter). The stems of these valves are 6 mm in diameter. Each valve is directly actuated by a hydraulic tappet (30 mm diameter) which has automatic adjustment.

The angle formed between the intake and exhaust valves is 47o and the single electrode plugs, 26.5 mm long, are in the centre of the combustion chamber. Their scheduled replacement interval is 120,000 km.

The intake consists of an aluminium manifold containing a chamber, with a Helmholtz bypass expansion chamber. Four pipes lead from the manifold to the cylinder head. The manifold contains a pressure sensor which provides engine load information to the ECU. Upstream, an electrically controlled throttle housing managed by the ECU ensures smoother operation.

The engine management system comprises of a Magneti Marelli 6 LP phased sequential injection unit and a BBC 4.1 monostatic ignition. The latter consists of four single coils placed vertically on the spark plugs and controlled directly by the ECU.

The exhaust manifold comprises a 4-in-1 type stainless-steel tube complete with an aluminium thermal protection panel. Behind the manifold, the exhaust connection is formed by a metallic hose that reduces noise generated by the engine and exhaust assembly.

The exhaust line comprises of a metal catalytic converter placed under the body which can absorb 120 g ft3 and has a capacity of 2 l, an intermediate silencer with a capacity of 7 l and lastly, across the car under the boot, a 25 l capacity silencer.

The exhaust finishes in a chrome-plated twin exhaust pipe with a diameter of 50 mm, emphasising the sporting nature of the 206 GTi 180.

Transmission
The four-cylinder EW10 J4S engine is linked to a BE4 5-speed manual gearbox identical to that used on the 2.0 l EW10 J4 engine of the 206 GTi. However, to obtain a dynamic gear change in slow bends, such as a hairpin for example, first gear has a longer gear ratio to allow a speed of 66 km/h at 7000 rpm.

The clutch plate, with a cable-controlled mechanism, has an auto adjusting clutch cable and a diameter of 228 mm.

The RC version is equipped with 7J17 light-alloy wheels which are offset from the body by 28 mm and fitted with 205/40 R17 W tyres with a rolling circumference of 1.816 m.

Suspension and Wheels
The suspension and wheels of the 206 GTi 180 are designed to enhance the vehicle's performance and sporting temperament without sacrificing passenger comfort. The suspension includes the following features: A Mc Pherson type wishbone front axle with a detached 21 mm diameter antiroll bar and hydraulic shock absorbers set to a pressure of 3 bars. To obtain the best possible suspension efficiency, in difficult conditions, the use of Pirelli P7000 tyres, together with a modified design compared to the 206 GTi (toe out 5.5 mm ± 1 instead of 2.5 mm) and more rigid springs (40 mm/100 dan instead of 55 mm/100 dan), combine to offer good roadholding and handling with advanced engine performance.

A rear axle with trailing arms rigidly attached to a cross member, two 20 mm diameter torsion bars, a 22 mm diameter anti-roll bar and two hydraulic shock absorbers. To maintain rear axle stability and minimize changes in track caused by transverse loadings, two tie rods connect the suspension arms to a light alloy yoke which is rigidly attached to the cross member.

The front (21 mm diameter) and rear (22 mm diameter) anti-roll bars differ from the GTi version to compensate for the increased stiffness of the springs and to enhance road handling. The 206 GTi 180 is equipped with MK60 TEVES electronic stability programme (ESP). This makes it possible, in difficult situations, to improve driving safety in the event of evasive or sudden turning of the steering wheel, while retaining driving pleasure during brisk driving. The function is de-activated by a push-button located on the fascia panel to the left of the steering column. After the system has been de-activated, it can be reconnected by pressing the button again or switching off the engine.

The hydraulic power steering is adjusted according to engine speed. This assistance is progressively reduced, and, from an engine speed of 3800 rpm stabilises at its minimum value. Braking is by means of four discs – two ventilated at the front (283 mm diameter, 26 mm thick) and two non-ventilated at the rear (247 mm diameter, 8 mm thick).

These have single-piston brake calipers with a diameter of 54 mm at the front and a diameter of 32 mm at the rear.

The 206 GTi 180 is equipped with MK 60 TEVES anti-lock braking (ABS) combining all braking functions, electronic stability programme (ESP), traction control (ASR) and the regulation of braking torque to each wheel.

Emergency braking assistance guarantees maximum deceleration when required, while retaining an appropriate level of force on the pedal during minor and moderate deceleration. In the event of sharp deceleration (8 m/s2) the vehicle's hazard lights are activated automatically.
