Kenworth Trucks is set to capture a larger slice of the short-haul B-Double and Quad Dog markets with the introduction of the new T404SAR. Launched at Trucks in Action at Warragul in February, the Kenworth T404SAR will provide a competitive advantage in 19m B-Double and most 19m Quad Dog vocations, enabling operators to improve profitability by carrying up to an extra half tonne per trip.

The T404SAR adopts the chassis platform and componentry of the T404S. The bumper-to-back-of-cab measurement of 2835mm is similar to the T404S, however the set forward axle on the T404SAR sets the two models apart. A bumper-to-front-axle measurement of 875mm is the distinguishing feature that enables the newest addition to the Kenworth family to meet its primary objective of optimising GCM loadings within these specialised applications.

With its short bumper-to-back-of-cab (2835mm), the T404SAR has the positive attributes of a cab-over - maneuverability, visibility, minimal overall length, together with all the other benefits of a conventional truck including ease of access in and out of the cab, serviceability, low tare, walk-through cab and optimum weight distribution.

Above all, the T404SAR is based on the same design and quality that comes with all other Kenworth models - best in class performance, fuel economy, reliability, driver satisfaction, lowest cost of ownership but most importantly, reliability and durability.

Kenworth's Director, Sales & Marketing, Joe Rizzo says the T404SAR is the best choice for many specialised construction and distribution applications.

“In these instances, a conventional truck is the preferred choice by drivers because they are constantly getting in and out of the vehicle - and a bonneted model is far more accessible. But, up until now, few heavy duty conventional trucks met the critical criteria for maximum loading compliance.

The new Kenworth T404SAR, with its relatively short BBC dimension and sloping bonnet, provides great visibility and one of the best turning circles of a conventional truck. The T404SAR now gives short-haul operators a new option - a vehicle with the major benefits of both a cab-over and a conventional - whilst also offering improved productivity, payload and, most importantly, profitability,” he explained.

The T404SAR is available with a range of Cummins, Caterpillar and Detroit engines, delivering up to 505 hp with 1850 lb/ft of torque. There are a choice of Fuller transmissions, including the optional Autoshift, as well as most of the vast array of axle, brake and suspension options for which Kenworth is renowned. The T404SAR is available with a day cab or optional 28” & 36” sleepers.

The new model features a sloping hood with engine-mounted air cleaners, or optional cowl mounted air cleaners to increase air intake in the dustiest conditions. It also includes forward fuel tank fairings (with the option of full length fairings) as well as a number of driver safety and comfort appointments, such as a one-piece curved windscreen and Daylite doors for improved visibility. An ergonomically-designed, wrap-around dashboard with overhead console to allow the driver easier access to all switches and radios gives the driver control, without having to stretch or reach unduly.

The T404SAR captures the spirit of the legendary Kenworth W900 SAR (which stood for ‘Short Australian Right-hand drive'). This was one of the first trucks designed and built by Kenworth in Australia in the early 1970s.

“The T404SAR has the look of the original SAR - with the sloping bonnet, the traditional, smart-looking, square grille and the front axle set forward. The original SAR was testament to Kenworth's ability to build trucks that are tough, reliable and durable, and most importantly, fit for purpose. You can still find SARs in immaculate condition, pulling their weight, across Australia 30 years later. That same philosophy of reliability and durability is built into every vehicle we produce - and our latest model, the T404SAR will continue this proud Kenworth tradition,” Mr Rizzo said.

Mr Rizzo said the T404SAR, like many other successful Kenworth models, was inspired by customers.

“We have developed many trucking innovations over the years, simply by listening to our customers and acting on their requests. The T404SAR was inspired by operators who wanted a short-bonnet vehicle that could carry a higher payload in the uniquely Australian applications of 19m Quad Dog and B-Doubles.

“And that's what sets Kenworth apart from our competitors. We have the ability to take ideas from Australian customers and bring them to market quickly. We have the design and engineering resources. We also have the local knowledge - we understand Australian conditions, Australian markets and what Australian trucking companies need to gain a competitive advantage,” Mr Rizzo added.

Kenworth trucks are designed and manufactured in Australia to meet the world's toughest applications. Kenworth, a division of PACCAR Australia, is market leader in heavy duty trucks in Australia. Its trucks are also exported to Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. PACCAR Inc, a Six Sigma company, is a worldwide manufacturer of heavy and medium duty trucks under the Kenworth, Peterbilt, DAF, Leyland and Foden nameplates. It also provides financial services and distributes truck parts related to its principal business.
