Hyundai has made its highly anticipated move into the Australian light commercial vehicle market in the form of the Hyundai iLoad - a three-seat van and six-seat crew van. The range also includes the Hyundai iMax - an executive shuttle with space for eight passengers and their luggage. Designed to rival European and Japanese offerings, the Hyundai iLoad and Hyundai iMax deliver comfort, style, versatility and practicality in a (working) vehicle at an affordable price.

Hyundai iLoad in Detail

Capable and capacious, the versatile new Hyundai iLoad is offered in two models - the three-seat iLoad van and six-seat iLoad crew van. Both are serious workhorses aimed at the needs of real-world trade and logistics customers.

Featuring rock-solid sliding doors on both sides, the iLoad van's load space is both flexible and accessible. With the optional twin-swing rear doors fitted it will accept two fully loaded pallets straight from a fork lift - eliminating the need for manual load handling and its associated time and labour imposition. To ensure safe transit, 10 (iLoad van) and 6 (iLoad crew van) sturdy floor-mounted tie-down eyes, which are standard equipment, are strategically located to secure the load.

The iLoad's standard rear door is a single-piece tailgate that lifts to form a handy awning when open, and allows unobstructed access from either side. When the twin-swing door option is fitted the doors open through a little more than 90 degrees in their default configuration, but a simple two-finger lift removes a clever hinge pin that allows the doors to swing through more than 180 degrees for maximum load space access.

Up front, the Hyundai iLoad van features seating for three in a single row, with a dedicated driver's bucket seat and a two-seat bench to the left. When not in use, the centre seat backrest can tip forward to form a wide armrest with inbuilt cup holders and open-topped centre storage compartment. It can also tilt back to the horizontal, where it functions as a handy stool for tradespeople who may need to do close-up work inside the cargo area of the van.
For added security, the Hyundai iLoad van's twin sliding doors and load space side panels are glass-free - restricting the view of the van's contents available to passers-by. Bonded windows are available as an accessory item.

The Hyundai iLoad crew van adds three seats in a second seating row, plus a sturdy load space partition with inbuilt window for maximum driver's rear vision. The headlining and floor covering continue all the way through the passenger compartment, there are storage bins with bottle holders in the sliding doors and rear-seat legroom is excellent.

Configured in standard form as a spacious six-seater the Hyundai iLoad crew van is comfortable and practical up front, and uncompromised in the cargo department. The rear cargo area will accommodate a fully loaded pallet, which may also be loaded by forklift when the vehicle is fitted with the optional twin-swing rear doors.

Dual front airbags, remote keyless entry (two remote keys are standard), alarm and Anti-Skid Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (ABD) are also standard. As is height adjustable seat belts, seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters for driver and front seat outboard occupant. There are power front windows and exterior mirrors, as well as tilt steering wheel, remote fuel flap - that doesn't operate when the nearside sliding side door is open.

At launch, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Traction Control System (TCS) will be optional with the high-output CRDi engine. ESP and TCS calibration for the 2.4-litre petrol engine variant is currently under development and will be brought to market as soon as possible.

Hyundai iMax in Detail

Backed by a five year / unlimited kilometre warranty, the Hyundai iMax shuttle accommodates eight with optimum space, in comfort and style, and is ideally placed to meet the needs of transit operators in the tourism, entertainment and corporate sectors ... and, of course, a small but significant number of larger than average families who want eight seats and luggage space as well.

The new Hyundai iMax shuttle benefits from Hyundai's growing reputation for style, quality and reliability, giving Europe's best a run for their money on all counts. Not surprisingly, the Hyundai iMax is significantly more affordable than many comparable European and Japanese entrants, despite often matching them kilowatt-for-kilowatt and specification-for-specification.

With upscale interior appointments and styling reflecting Hyundai's growing affinity with global design trends, the Hyundai iMax shuttle is configured with two comfortable bucket seats up front, and two bench seats behind, each accommodating three adults in comfort. Legroom is totally uncompromised, and even with every seating position occupied, significant load space - totalling 851 litres (VDA) - for personal luggage remains.

The middle seating row features 60:40 split-fold capability and also slides forwards or backwards to tailor occupant space and seating as required.

Interior ambience is passenger car-like, with two-tone interior trim, a six-speaker audio system and dual zone ducted air conditioning throughout. Six individually controllable overhead vents optimise and personalise ambient temperature throughout the rear cabin, ensuring comfort for all.

With car-like dashboard architecture and an instinctive, ergonomic control layout driver fatigue is minimised due to increase comfort levels. Interior appointments include: keyless entry, central locking, electric wing mirror adjustment, power front windows, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, remote fuel flap release (which does not operate when the sliding door is open), and an auxiliary input jack to facilitate the integration of the vehicle's audio system with personal audio devices including iPods and MP3 players.

Powertrains

Hyundai's commitment to the environmental benefits of hi-tech Common Rail Direct injection (CRDi) diesel engines continues with the release of the Hyundai iLoad & Hyundai iMax.

The flagship engine in the range is undoubtedly the potent 2.5-litre four-cylinder CRDi diesel engine, which is both intercooled and turbocharged. Peak outputs at 125kW (3800rpm) and 392Nm (2000-2500rpm) place it on par with comparable engines from Europe - often found in competing vehicles with higher pricing.

This engine features 17.6:1 compression, double overhead camshafts with four valves per cylinder and electronic injection management.

The 2.5-litre CRDi's technology and emissions performance combines a variable geometry turbocharger, low-friction balance shaft technology, and fuel rail pressures of 1600 bar conspiring to match the best Europeans not only in performance, but also in terms of refinement - smoothness, quiet operation and immediate throttle response - and of course fuel efficiency.

The result is outstanding: The 2.5 CRDi has an official ADR 81/01- rated fuel consumption of just 8.5 litres per 100km for the five-speed manual and 9.6 litres per 100km for the five-speed Selectronic automatic transmission.

Also available across the line-up is a hard-working and reliable 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine featuring multi-point fuel injection, double overhead camshafts, 10.5:1 compression and four valves per cylinder. Its peak outputs are competitive within the segment, too, at 129kW (6000rpm) and 228Nm (4200rpm). The 2.4-litre engine also rewards with spirited performance and excellent fuel efficiency, with an official ADR 81/01 consumption of just 10.1L/100km (manual) and 10.6L/100km (automatic).

The Hyundai iLoad in both van and crew van configuration is offered with the 2.4-litre petrol engine and five-speed manual transmission, and the high-output 2.5-litre CRDi turbocharged and inter-cooled diesel engine with a choice of five-speed manual or five-speed Selectronic automatic transmission.

The Hyundai iMax executive shuttle is offered with the 2.4-litre petrol engine and four-speed automatic transmission, and the high-output 2.5-litre CRDi turbocharged and inter-cooled diesel engine with five-speed manual transmission.

Suspension and Dynamic Performance

The new Hyundai iLoad and Hyundai iMax demonstrate that refinement and serious payload capacity are not necessarily mutually exclusive propositions. Careful development work and engineering optimisation boosts practicality and capacity for hard work - without forcing comfort and dynamic response to take a back seat.

With disc brakes all round and standard ABS across the range the Hyundai iLoad and Hyundai iMax really stop. Front rotors are 300mm in diameter, ventilated, with two-piston callipers and pad wear warning indicators. At the rear, single-piston callipers clamp 320mm disc rotors, ventilated, with integral drum-in-hat parking brake system.

Large disc rotors necessitated the specification of standard large-diameter wheels, which also bolster the ranges' considerable visual presence. The Hyundai iMax shuttle runs 6.5J x 16 alloy wheels shod with generous and sure-footed 215/70 R16C tyres, while the Hyundai iLoad models run steel wheels of the same size, with identical tyre specification.

Sheer size does not limit manoeuvrability. Despite its overall length these vehicles of more than 5.1 metres, with a wheelbase measuring 3.2 metres, have a turning circle of just 11.2 metres - which makes getting large payloads into small delivery spaces a breeze, even in increasingly congested urban environments. The pleasantly weighted steering is direct and responsive, too, via an hydraulically assisted rack-and-pinion system requiring just 3.57 turns, lock-to-lock.

MacPherson strut suspension with gas filled shock absorbers ensures civilised and responsive dynamic performance, while at the rear the suspension configuration is a case of fit for purpose. In keeping with the Hyundai iMax executive shuttle's core business - the refined transport of up to eight people and their luggage - a coil sprung arrangement with five locating links ensures optimum ride quality. A leaf sprung setup maximises payload capacity on the Hyundai iLoad van and Hyundai iLoad crew van. Front engine/rear drive helps balance weight distribution in both cases.

To maximise traction, a locking differential is optional on Hyundai iLoad and Hyundai iMax models.

Models powered by the high-output CRDi engine with manual transmission can tow up to 2000kg (braked trailer) and the CRDi auto and petrol variants can tow up to 1500kg.
